"Kilroy Was Here" was a concept/rock opera album by Styx. I've started a fan fic based on it, since the touring show basically had the beginning of the story bookend a concert and was less than satisfying on overall plot. As far as I know the album itself is open for interpretation. I don't have the actual album with a booklet and all, just a burned copy.
Backstory: (Read this or watch the video!) Doctor Righteous (James "JY" Young) is leading a crusade against Rock and Roll. It's immoral and leading the kids to sex and drugs. Righteous has made Rock and Roll illegal. The concert being held tonight will lead in the arrest of Robert Kilroy (Dennis DeYoung) for playing rock and killing a Righteous supporter. Kilroy was framed for murder, but will spend the next five years in jail until he escapes. The night he escapes he will meet Jonathan Chance (Tommy Shaw). Jonathan previously hacked into Righteous' television program (which is the only one on any air wave) and broadcasted a concert of Kilroy's, exclaiming over it: "You can't stop the music, you bastard! This is Jonathan. Jonathan Chance. Long live rock and roll!" This inspired Kilroy to escape.
But before Kilroy escapes, I had the idea that perhaps they weren't meeting for the first time. Also there's robots and mind control and there will more than likely be Kilroy/Jonathan slash. I mean with "Haven't We Been Here Before" - you just can't HELP IT! (Seriously I love this song, but WTF I do not get the context Dennis had for this in the concert without it being a love song between Jon and Kilroy. Really. So I'm making it one. But there's much more behind it too... You'll have to wait and see.)
I'm really happy I figured most of the over all story out, but this is sort of the prelude to the whole shebang...
The first time Jonathan Chance met Robert Orin Charles Kilroy he was 16. It was to be the last time Kilroy would speak to a fan, one on one. Not that either man knew this, of course. But neither would forget. It was before the show, the crew still loading equipment quickly into the back of the theater. It was way before the show, thanks to Righteous protesters who had been following every rock group around. But playing in Chicago, Kilroy’s hometown and Righteous’ headquaters, it was as important to Kilroy as his first recording audition had been. It was something he had to do, this night more than anything else. The rock star was lugging his own amp from the van when this small skinny kid approached him. Kilroy’s first instinct was it was a protester, come to tell him off, but the rips in the knees of the kid’s jeans were a dead give away. Kilroy set the amp down as Jonathan walked up. And Jonathan didn’t say anything at first, just staring at him, which made Kilroy smirk.
“You want an autograph or something, kid?”
“Oh!” Jonathan snapped in to reality and grinned, “Oh, sorry, I just didn’t think I’d— I mean aren’t you guys kinda early?”
“Well, gotta be now, you know? Beat the crowd,” Kilroy put a sour emphasis on ‘crowd’ making Jonathan nod. It was just getting worse with Righteous. “Hey, Chuck, you gotta pen?” Kilroy asked his passing bassist.
Jonathan stopped him, “Oh no, that’s okay. Well, I just wanted to met you, really. You— and your band and music, have been a huge inspriation to me. We need rock now more than ever, I think it’s great you came back home.”
Kilroy grinned, “It’s good to be back. What’s your name, kid?”
Jonathan stuck out his hand, introducing himself and when Killroy shook it he noticed two things; steady as a rock dispite his previous case of nerves and the blisters on his fingers. “When’d you start?”
“Start?”
“Guitar. Right?”
“Few years back. I’ve got a band— well, we just play in the garage, but—”
“Hey, I use to play in the garage. Don’t knock the garage!” Jonathan grinned bashfully and Kilroy continued, reaching in the pocket of his jeans, placing the gift in Jonathan’s hand and holding it there for a moment, “Free advice, Jonathan Chance, from a fellow musician. Never, ever give up. Like you said, we need rock and roll more than ever right now. It’s gonna be kids like you who help us bring down Righteous.” It was a risky thing to say even behind a theater early in the morning. “Coming to the show tonight?”
“Wouldn’t miss it,” Jonathan confirmed, staring down at his hand.
“Hey, bring your band around after the show. Maybe we’ll jam?”
Jonathan looked up and Kilroy didn’t need to wait for an answer, the look on the kid’s face said it all.
Kilroy picked up the amp again, giving him a wave, “Till next time, Jonathan Chance.”
Kilroy disappeared inside the theater and Jonathan gave a hurried “See ya! Thanks!” not wanting to seem rude. He held the guitar pick between his fingers, the early morning sun shining off the metal tip. The dark blue plastic was faded from wear. Jonathan pushed the pick in his pocket and ran back to his bike. He was nearly hit by no less than three cars on the street cycling to school.
