RENT workshop tapes
Jun. 14th, 2005 07:14 pmA friend of mine lent me these. (It's
kittencuffs my bestest pal in the whole world. Happy, Ali?) The WORKSHOP tapes for RENT. Now if only I could get my hands on the Aida workshop tapes. (Chip Esten as Rademas!)
So here are my thoughts..
Act One
1) Voice Mail 1/Rent/ You okay honey? - Hey Roger *did* actually have a job. He worked as a bar tender for some guy name Dave. Also, no Adam? Nuts! I'm looking for a cast list, but I'm coming up empty. Gosh this "Rent" song is dark. And improved greatly. Talk about rough cuts. Anyways, Mark is one morbid sonofabitch and Rog ain’t too far behind. Collins, Tom Collins is a short Jewish white dude. I'd bet my left pinkie on it.
2) "You're a Fool/ Today 4 U" - "You're a fool" is actually pretty darn good. It's a watered down Roger and Mark fight in the end of act 2. Uh, real act 2.
3) "Today 4 U/ Do a little business" - "T4U" is pretty much the same, except for a few notes. The hell? That's my initial reaction to "Do a little business.' But the "So this is Christmas" is a nice thing in there. The repetition of "Alison" is cool And Mark's sarcastic remarks are funny. Roger sounds like he's commenting from the window. The beat of the song screams "cooperate slime" though. It's pretty cool, I think now.
4) "Female to female/ Come to Meeting" - "FtF" is good but really dated. The music sounds straight from the 80/early 90s. Which, is when this was recorded, the early 90s, but nothing on the RENT soundtrack really sounds *this* dated. However its a nice intro for Maureen and Joanne. Also hints at Maureen's bulimia as she calls herself a "dumb cow". Short reprisal of "You're a fool" in "Come to the Meeting" about Benny. Cool. Ah, mentions of April now and the car she left Roger, obviously changed later on. Huh. Mark's line: "Suicidal girl who OD/ He said he loved her/ What he loves is to bleed/" Does Mark mean that literally? Is Roger a cutter? ...I think ... Um, someone just got punched. It sounded like Roger, but I can't be sure... Looking at the RENT Workshop lyrics it says Roger hits Mark. That didn't sound like Anthony Rapp say "Oof!" though.
5) "He says" - Mostly Mark, it's the watered down fight, but with the real fight's tune! But the tinker-toy kid piano Rugrats tune in the back is a tad annoying.
6) "Right Brain" - Hey, this is "Will I"! Roger's singing it. And ...Hey! This is "Glory"! The world 'glory' is later exchanged for 'the right brain'. Thank god. Also Adam for whoever this dude is. Another thank god. Really, this guy reminds me of Mikey from Ninja Turtles (the new cartoon) with out the surfer accent fooling around with a guitar. ...Whoa. "Through her thighs into the sea"?! Teh fuck? John Larson, where was your right brain?
7) "Light my candle" - Wow, I have never been more happy to hear Daphne Rubin-Vega than right now. I think she sounds better in this version than in the other one. This Roger doesn't sound very... anything. Where's Adam when you need him? "Uh-huh, I used to be a junkie." You sing like you still are, Rog. This song is the same word for word.
8) "Christmas bells/ Voice Mail 2" - "And a braaa!" I love that. Every time.
9) "Female to female 2" - Another "Times like these I really appreciate Mark" from Maureen. She's really a bitch in this workshop.
10) "Another Day" - Isn't this a little early? I hope this isn't in order... *head desk* This guy emotes about as much as Keanu Reeves. Thank God for Daphne. I appreciate her SO much more now. I didn't really like her in the first place and probably won't miss her in the movie. Roger's part is the same and a few of Mimi's lines are different, but I like them. But someone stick a fork in this Workshop Roger.
11) "Christmas Bells 2" - I LOVE it when people can't whistle. Oh it's a killer every time. This "I don't need your goddamn help" bag lady has laryngitis, apparently. She’s not very good anyway.
12) “Santa fe” – Collins reminds me of Andrew McCarthy, or that guy that played Todd in the show “Girlfriends.” He’s not a bass, but he doesn’t need to try and get low down rugged. It’s not his strength. However when he gets back to his normal voice, he’s not bad at all. I hope he doesn’t try “Cover you” rugged.
13) “I’ll Cover You” – Aw, cute intro! Made me giggle, however corny it was. Go on, read it. See? Wasn’t that cute?
14) “Will I” – To tell you the truth and I’ll probably get tomatoed, but I usually skip this song. I just don’t like it that much. But already the Broadway version is better than this one. Sure this is workshop/rehersal kinda stuff, but the harmonies could be a lot tighter.
15) “You’ll Get Over It” – Ooh, Maureen and Mark alone? Joanne’s the one that’s late. Mark’s desperate, wants Maureen back. “This is just a phase like girls and horses/ You never even wear flannel shirts/ You’ll get over it.” I like this song! A little dated, but a cool alternative to “Tango Maureen,” one of my favorite songs in the play.
16) “Christmas bells 3” – Another favorite. I made George Baldi the third turn his head as I walked out of a Rockapella Meet and greet singing this. I wonder if he had RENT on CD. And if he listened to it after we spoke to him about it. Ahem, getting off track… Oh, the lyrics page says this for the weird guy in the back after the greedy broker’s tweed part. “Something something ya baby.” I hear: “Happy Chanukah, baby.” It’s not that hard to distinguish. “Got any D, man? Got any C, man?” Am I the only one thinking Lefty from Sesame Street as The Man?
17) “Over the moon” – What’s with the Jaws theme in the background? This ones a little long winded. I prefer the Broadway one much more. There was no Mark “I better get this started, damn” moo. I love that.
18 & 19) “La Vie Boheme” – Did they make Benny do a Sean? (Meaning that they shoved Benny in a room by himself to sing, as it sometimes sounds like that in a few songs of Rockapella’s with Sean Altman. However he projects so damn well, he doesn’t *sound* like he’s in a room by himself. Sean projects, not Benny. Benny *does* sound like he’s in a back room.) And I think Anthony and Daphne sound awesome together. That’s one of my favorite lines in this song, “Why Dorothy and Toto went over the rainbow, to blow off Auntie Em!” They sound great together. “To marijuana.” Another great line. I love how Collins yells it in the Broadway version. I love how Workshop!Collins holds it in, he sounds like he’s really smoking. Sounds like they shoved Collins in the same room as Benny. And Mark wants to meet Maureen in the bathroom… I like how this pays attention to Maureen and Mark, but it seems like it’s over powering Roger and Mimi. Or maybe that’s just because Workshop!Roger sucks.
20) “AZT Break” – The dark music is freakin’ me out. “Joanne, it's just Mark.” Says Maureen. What happened? I’m confused. Did she fuck Mark in the bathroom?! What’s going on! Oh… Darn it.
Hate to leave everyone hanging, but my head is killing me. It’s 10pm and I think I’ll go to bed early. Act Two (or the end of Act One and Act Two. "I should tell you" is on the other CD) tomorrow. I promise.
Also, today totally blows. I had to call in sick and Robin tells me I have to rbing a note from the doctor. That hsouldn't be to hard, I'm going to do it tomorrow morning, but the fact that I have to pisses me off. Especially since I'm still feeling like I'm gonna throw up at any second and now I have a headache. ANd now I can't find my muppet CD Ali burned me anywhere and I won't be able to make it again because all of those songs are on her laptop wihich is broke, nevermind that it's in Tony's house. (Visit
kittencuffs's journal for more info on that)
And I have to work from 2 until closing (11pm roughly) tomorrow.
Ugh.
